Help with timing...
 

Just picked up a 1982 red porsche 924, non turbo (unfortuantely)...and prior to me buying it, the kid who had it said it overheated, wouldnt start and stay running, then he put it away for winter.

Now it's in my garage, we can get it to start, but it immediately bogs down and dies, within less than 5 seconds. i'm thinking it is a timing problem because one of the times it started, i saw a flash come from the intake piping just a foot prior to the intake itself (i saw it because the piping came lose a bit at the last clamp, and is somewhat opened/exposed)...and i then noticed the timing sprocket was off by about an inch and a half to two inches, not a lot, but cuold be the problem causing an intake valve to be opened during combustion...

so what i'm asking all of you is, what steps do i need to go thruogh to adjust the timing, does anybody know a site or guide to doing this?

and if i'm wrong in thinking it's timing, please correct me, every bit of help is greatly appreciated,

hi, might be mental but have you checked the fuel relay and fuse ,both have cause problems on my turbo in the past.(erratic starting)sometimes its the simple things

turn the engine via the centre bolt on the oil pump so that the notch on the v belt lines up with the pointer on the oil pump(without cam belt on),then set timing mark on cam.pointer on the camshaft cover lines up with the dot on the timing belt pulley .install the timing belt ,set tension (belt should just turn 90 degrees with fingers on long sideof belt) should all be set now.also 924 doesn't damage valves unlike 944 or 24s.hope this helps joff
