Maintenance

Hi all. I was wanting to know your thoughts on some recommended maintenance for 944 and 924S such as the 15,000 mile timing belt retension and the 45,000 timing belt replacement. Some shops I go to say you absolutely have to change the belt, water pump, and rollers every 45K. And some shops say changing the belt alone is fine. And is the 15K retension absolutely necessary? Any 924S/944 owners experience would be much appreciated.

RE: Maintenance

Timing belt needs to be retensioned every 15k and also 1000k after a new motor is put in. Timing belt is recommended to be replaced at 45k but I have done it at 60k without problems. When the timing belt gets replaced you want to replace the water pump since you'll be there anyway, along with the rollers, tensioners, etc. Besides, the new belt will put more tension on the water pump bearing which can cause it to leak.

The timing belt retensioning is only around $100. The whole timing belt job is usually around $800-1000 in my experience. I know it isn't cheap but you really need to do the job right. Hope this helps.

RE: Maintenance

Yeah, when I first had my 944 S2 I had the belts changed....

....then about 6 months later the water pump failed. I then had to have the pump replaced and the belts etc, etc.....
