928 Timing Belt Replacement
 

Hey all new here........I have the awesome oppertunity to trade for a 1984 928with less than 94000 miles on it. My questions is how big of a do it yourself hassle is the timing belt change. I am a decent mechanic on BMW's and Mercedes but they all use chains. The car I am looking at has no service records but you can tell it has not been abused.

Ok Cool do we need that "special $500" tool to do the belt in a 928?

Do we have one of the interference engines?

I appreciate your time, its been a dream of mine to own a 928 and a fellow has offered to make me a trade for a Camaro I just restored and I would like to take him up on it but I have a 16 mo old and I need something I can depend on as a second fun car.

I don't know that I would call a 928 exactly reliable. They aren't bad, but you are talking about a 23 year old car. Those don't fall in the reliable category as I look at it. Stuff wears out after 20 years, and you will always be fixing something, especially on a 928. If your engine is the old 16V, then it is not an interference engine. When they changed to the new engine with the 32V design, then it became an interference engine.

I have the 9201 tool, but I don't use it anymore. It is good to have it if you have never done a belt before. I use the 90 degree twist method, and I can get very close to what the tool says at any given time. IMHO the tool is over engineering by Porsche. It can give a different reading without changing the belt tension, so I don't put a lot of weight into it.
