1983 944 Power Loss

I have a 1983 944. The car doesn't "pull" above 4,000rpm in any gear. It occasionally performs normally, but almost every time I drive it this happens. I have replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter (these replacements helped the performance a little bit). The sparks plugs and oil are fine. I punched out the cat thinking that it could be clogged and causing the power loss.
Any ideas on what it could be?

Thanks, Joe

Could be a dead spot on the AFM, or even a bad O2 sensor. Also a failing TPS can cause some upper rpm problems.

Thanks Doc,

But could a "failing" TPS get progressively worse? Because my problem has.

Usually a bad TPS will cut power below 2000rpms, and is more immediate in occurrence. You can, however, unplug the TPS and then drive it, and see if it drives better....if it does, then replace the TPS. Unplugging it will default the system, and the car should actually drive fairly normally (though with a little higher idle).

Well I used to have the problem of no power at 2000 rpm but after replacing the fuel, fuel filter, and fuel pump, it got a bit better and the power only cuts off at 4k rpm. I'll try driving with it unplugged.....I've also heard to try driving with the O2 sensor unplugged, would that help me find a solution?

02 sensors shouldn't have any effect like that, so I would try the TPS first.

Well, unplugging the tps did not effect anything. But knowing I had a full tank of horrible Albertson's gas (I knew because of the nastyness that dripped out of the fuel filter when I replaced it), running it dry, and filling it with supreme seemed to do the trick. The car has been fine the last 10 times I have driven it. I think that could have been the minor problem. Thanks for all of the information. I'll let you know if the problem reoccurs.

Thank You Doc
