Got a car 1983 944s N/A has roll cage, suspension, seats, racing harnesses.

we are located in Nor Cal area.car is a 1983 944S

A group of ppl going be involved in this for fun and the opportunity, im gonna advertise a window company and drive the car for the gentlemen.basically i be responsible for adjustments, new parts, mechanical upgrades so and such.after finishing this project its gonna be a fun car to have a round...

So i have few questions, the more info the better.

What are the categories that this car can be raced in?

what are the common engine swaps for this year and model?

do they come limited slip diffs? if not whats a good replacement for the OEM diff?

last, we trying to shed weight as much as we can, i know the seats, do panels, maybe glass...

info from experienced guys with this car would be well appreciated.

Well if it is an 83, then it is a 944, not a 944S. The 944S was offered in 87/88 and used a dual overhead cam 2.5L. The 83 was a low compression 2.5L with an 8v single overhead cam engine.

They can be raced in the NASA 944 Spec or PCA SP1 series (same class/rules etc), PCA club racing, or SCCA. Keep in mind, you need to abide by certain rules for each series, so you will want to look into what can or can not be done per series. The most affordable series is the SPEC/SP1 series (PCA adopted the 944 SPEC rules into their own class called SP1). PCA club racing and scca will be much more expensive. NASA limits the modifications you can make, and require you to run certain suspension, tires, etc to make the field as even as possible. It is getting to be an incredibly popular series due to lower cost racing.

If the car has option code 220, then it has the LSD option.

Again, you need to decide which series you are going to race before doing much work to the car. Some series you have to run the interior, some series you can make certain suspension changes, tires, etc. You don't want to dump a lot of time and money into the car before deciding on a series, then finding out you need to redo everything you just did.
