944 Starter problems...help
 

Hi all! I have an 84 944. I went to start it one day and it wouldn't turn over. Thought the wife ran the battery down but it was fine and it still would not turn over when boosted. I took the starter out and took it in, they changed brushes but it was fine other than that. Still won't turn over. When i try to, it just clicks once and that is it. I crawl under and there is power to the starter and key on power when trying to start it. Any ideas of what to check??? Thanks!

Hi WelderGuy, it sounds like you have checked everything already. If it's NOT an automatic have you tried bump starting the car by getting a couple of people to push the car while you sit in, select 1st gear with the clutch pedal pressed down, then when you get a little speed, let the clutch pedal up quickly? The car should start, even if the battery and/or starter are faulty! If it fails to start like this, your flywheel may be jammed or the engine may have seized. If it does start, the fault must either be with the battery, startermotor, solenoid, electrical connections, flywheel teeth (broken) or the ignition switch.

Yes that was my fear that the engine was seized. But you can bump start it and it runs normally. Now someone said that there has to be a full 12V going to the starter. Is there a voltage regulator inline between the battery and the starter? If so where is it? That is the only thing i can think of!!

[font="Tahoma"]Hi, I don't think there is a voltage regulator between the battery and starter. It could be that you have broken, loose or disconnected wiring in the starting circuit

Clean ALL connections at the battery (including the posts), starter, and most importantly the grounds at the block.
