Bad Differential?

I did something really dumb...Pulled off a stop light at 2000 rpm and dropped the clutch. I think I destroyed the diff. All hell broke loose, and a drive train banging was felt through the drive train. When I pushed in the clutch everything was O.K ,and now the tranny won't even go into gear. Needless to say, the red rocket came home on a flat bed. Now, can anyone tell me as well what a used tranny/diff is worth. As well, is this a weakness in the 944?

In case your wondering, I've learn't my lesson.
Thanks
Paul

Yup, you made the #1 no no with a 944...clutch drops. A non turbo tranny (non lsd) should only set you back 300-400 plus install.

Hi Doc
Is this the achillize heel of the 944? As well, is there another model of Porsche (e.g. 928, 924) that shares this tranny?

Thanks
Paul

Responded to your email. The 924S and the early 944 shared the same transaxle. The late 944 transaxles can be used in the early cars, but not vise versa due to the speedometer pickup.

This is the achilles heel of people who think a Porsche 944 is a drag racing car.

Bet you won't do that again.........

yea im pretty sure i just did the same thing on wednesday.. but a 944 turbo transmission would work? and would the lsd be worth the extra money it might be?

Yes a 944 turbo transmission will work but even with a LSD you can not dump the clutch, the ring and pinion will not take it! Be careful buying a used transmission it could also be abused!!

This one is for willard 3
I have owned 60 or so motorcycles, 10 or so english cars and have never done this kind of damage to any of them.I have restored many of these to showroom condition, andam normally a very carefull person who knows better than to do something like this. This however is my first Porsche, and as such, one makes mistakes. Mine was in becoming a little spirited.....and for that I will pay. So, my point, is to thank you for your smug response....
