burning oil
my 944 burns a lot of oil...
Can someone tell me if I'm supposed to check oil level hot or cold? |
RE: burning oil
Should be checked warm with the engine off, but it isn't going to matter much either way. Spec is 1 quart per 1000 miles.

RE: burning oil
Thanks.
It's a turbo, which probably changes things a little. I'd say it's going through a quart about every 500 miles. The reason I asked about checking it hot/cold is that there's about a quarter to half in difference in oil level... or about a quart. I don't want to overfill it, or let it get too low. Had a leakdown test done on it ... results: 1-10%, 2-68%, 3-10%, 4-28%. |
RE: burning oil
Ouch, those are not good numbers. Run a compression test as well.
|
RE: burning oil
what should the numbers be? the guy who did the test said that the two 10% cylinders weren't too bad... Does he know what he's talking about?
|
RE: burning oil
Dude you have a 68% leakdown and a 28% leakdown, that is horrible. They should 10% absolute maximum. I am really interested in what the compression numbers are.

RE: burning oil
I really don't want to put any more money into this thing, but I guess I'll have to get that compression check done...
I'll let you know the results. Thanks for the help. |
RE: burning oil
it's been a while...
I called the guy who did the bad engine rebuild and gave him the leakdown numbers. Surprisingly, he said that he'd fix it. He said that the injectors are dumping too much fuel into the cylinders which is blowing out the seals, forcing gas into the oil, etc. Not good. [:'(] But it does explain why the car's been running rich, and burning oil. It could even explain the problem with the idle. What is the most likely reason that the injectors would be dumping too much fuel into the cylinders? I was told it might be the computer or oxygen sensor. |
RE: burning oil
I've put $12k into this...
I'll take $6k |
