Buying 944 end of summer

I'm looking into getting a 944, between '86 and '89, non turbo and relatively stock. Any suggestions as to what to look for as far as engine wear, spots prone to rust etc? Also any recommendations as to other years to look for, or is that year range pretty decent?
I'm looking to modify the engine a bit, enhance performance and possibly put in on the track a few times at Mosport. Any suggestions as far as quality part makes, etc.
Thanks.

RE: Buying 944 end of summer

You can find an excellent buyer's guide at:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarti...yers_guide.htm
Pelican is also a very good site for parts as are Perfomance Products, Paragon, and Auto Atlanta. (Auto Atlanta's catalog has a complete set of part diagrams that show what everything looks like and how they fit together.)The post 85.5 models are considered the best, chiefly because of their redesigned interior. Frankly I would hold off on any sort of tuning. The car can be driven faster than you can probably drive it. What you need most is seat time. Join PCA and attend as many driver's education and autocross events as you can afford. Once you can push the car to it's limits, you can think about extending them.
