Clanking noise.
I need some help here. Last night my 944 starting making this clanking noise when I hit the gas pedal while Im moving. My father said it is probably the CV Joints in the rear wheels. But I dont know. Has this ever happened to any one of you all or do any of you all know what this is and how to fix that? Thanks.

RE: Clanking noise.
If its a "clicking" noise that is speed dependent (the faster you go, the faster it clicks) and is more noticible when you are turning, then its almost certainly the cv's. They are easy enough to take care of, most people opt to just buy nnew cv axle shafts and put them in, but you can also rebuild them if you don't mind getting really greasy. Make sure you have an 8mm triplesquare socket to remove the bolts holding them in (they aren't a hex head and you'll be screwed if you try to use one on these bolts), and make sure that you thoroughly clean out the heads of the bolts and make sure the socket is fully seated before you turn the wrench, or ele you will strip them and have to drill the heads off.
Feel free to ask if you need more help on this. Regards, |
RE: Clanking noise.
It could also be your exhaust - I had a similar noise once (sort of a clanky rumble when RPMs hit about 4500) that was hard to track down. Replaced all of the gaskets on the exhaust pipe and it went away. The problem is usually CV joints but if it isn't...

RE: Clanking noise.
It was the CV Joints on the passenger side in the rear. Thanks for all your info.

RE: Clanking noise.
You did both sides while you were taking care of the problem, right? :) Did you do the work yourself?

Did you replace the bolts, or reuse the existing ones? Some people (like me) have had problems with the "reused" bolts backing out after a couple of hundred miles.
