Clutch question on 85.5 944. Help.
 

I am looking at a 85.5 944. It has some minor body imperfections and needs tires but otherwise seems to be in pretty good shape. They want 3500. They have the reciepts for a recent timing belt job with all the related parts replaced, and a new clutch put in recently. The thing I noticed when I drove it was when I down shifted to second gear and second gear only it felt like I was getting wheel hop from the rear end. What could this be and could it be serious. The clutch was replaced by a reputable porshe mechanic about 15000 miles ago.

Was it immediate once you shifted into 2nd, or was it a gradual thing that was speed dependent? Did it occur at a specific rpm? I'd be cautious on this, as it sounds like you could be looking at a new tranny soon on it and $3500 should buy a pretty decent 944 these days.

I guess that wasn't the best explanation. It is fine accelerating in second gear, it only happens when you let the clutch out from a down shift then it immediately goes away once the clutch is all the way out. It seems to be more noticeable at a lower rpm. Thanks.

sh944 was right be very cautious. You can find a good 944 these days for that price. I lucked out on mine 85.5, $2400.00 rebuilt motor and tranny. new clutch no body damage what so ever new paint. 145k. If you really want the car I would suggest bringing the price down lower to the cost of a new tranny. Cause it sounds like eventually that will be an definate issue.
