Couple of Questions

In my constant pursuit to keep up with my 944's love of my wallet, I'm soon to be replacing the Steering Wheel (it's just ugly). I want to replace it with one from a later 944 that has an airbag. I know the airbag is not going to work, but I got the wheel hella cheap and it looks better to me. Is this going to fit and/or will I need to do anything special to make the horn work? Or is just not advised?

Secondly, My voltage seems to drop to around 11.3 volts when I'm cruising on the highway. It will return, every so often, to 13 for a while, and then drop again. I can't find any common sequence (lights on or off, radio on or off, fan on low or high) that seems to be the culprit, and my battery is new. I'm guessing either alternator or voltage regulator. Any ideas?

Brett

RE: Couple of Questions

Yeah I had this problem with my Toyota MR2. Doesnt matter if the battery is new. I guessed it to be the IC Regulator or bushes in side of the Altenator and indeed it was the bushes that had worn down due to constant spinning and friction. I took my altenator to a local specialist and he had any exchange thing going on, I give him my dead altenator and he gives me a recond one. Cant remember how much it was, but it was under £40.
Im pretty sure this will solve your problem

RE: Couple of Questions

I would first clean all your grounds (battery, engine), and see if that takes care of it. If not, then look at the voltage regulator. It is a bosch alternator, so if you find someone that rebuilds bosch units, you can have it completely gone through for under 100 bucks. I haven't had an airbag wheel apart in a long time, so i can't remember what all you will need to make it work. I would guess you will need the Airbag contact switch (for the horn).

RE: Couple of Questions

Thanks for all the advice. This past Saturday night , I was driving home from a birthday party. The alternator went ahead and died. I coasted into my condo with less than 9 volts running the entire car and pretty much no headlights. I replaced the alternator with a rebuilt one someone locally was selling on eBay. This seems to have fixed the problem, and has contributed a few ponies. FYI, you can't trust the "alternator failure/low voltage" lamp.

Let's Motor!

Which system's grounds are you looking for?

RE: Couple of Questions

Main ground for the battery is right next to the battery, and also it goes to the back of the engine block.
