Cranks, but no start
I have replaced the alternator, fuel pump relay, plugs are new and so is the battery. I have checked the coil too, good spark. The tach does not bounce on starting. So either Computer, reference sensor, or speed sensor? What does everyone think? I was driving it...shut it off, never started again. I have a 2100 mile trip to take in this 83 944...help me!!

RE: Cranks, but no start
Check your speed and reference sensors both

RE: Cranks, but no start
I had that problem, mine turned out to be the computer. somehow some water worked its way into it through the battery area, dripped in, and shorted it out.

RE: Cranks, but no start
Well I ordered both sensors from a Porsche place in Phoenix, Az. Hopefully have them by saturday and I will install them right away. If this doesn't work, all thats left is the computer....right? I will keep you posted on any progress.

RE: Cranks, but no start
what parts did you order and from where? (part numbers) because my 944 is doing the same thing, turns over but no start
|
RE: Cranks, but no start
Check the tac bounce before you order those, if the tac does bounce when you crank the engine its not the sensors.
|
RE: Cranks, but no start
No bounce upon start.

RE: Cranks, but no start
tach does not bounce....what parts do i need?

RE: Cranks, but no start
I'm getting my parts from a place in Phoenix Az. called ..........
20th Street Auto Parts 3244 South 40th Street, Phoenix Arizona 85040 Toll Free 1-800-999-4911 Arizona 1-602-258-2020They specialize in only Porsche, Audi and Corvette parts. The parts I ordered are called Speed and Reference sensors, sometimes called Timing Sensors. |
RE: Cranks, but no start
thanks man, i hope thats it...its expensive freakin car
|
RE: Cranks, but no start
I cannot remove the timing sensor. Its loose, turns freely and I have it pulled up about an 1/4 inch, yet it will not come out. I even sprayed it with WD-40. Amy suggestions?
|
RE: Cranks, but no start
I've replaced the sensors and my car is finally running!! Thank you so much to everyone that helped and gave advice. I'm truly thankful.:)
|
RE: Cranks, but no start
I'm having trouble finding the timing sensors... do i need to get two?
|
RE: Cranks, but no start
You need to establish which of the two sensors is bad. You dont need to replace both, but it sure wouldnt hurt.
|
RE: Cranks, but no start
ok, but I dont have a book... How do I find these sensors?
|
RE: Cranks, but no start
One sensor is located at the top of the bell housing at the back of the engine over the flywheel, the other is on the back of the cam pully on the front of the engine.
|
RE: Cranks, but no start
That reply may or may not be correct. Drummer and I both have a 1983 944...both of my sensors were together...down below the oil cap, on top of the bell housing.

RE: Cranks, but no start
Go to http://www.clarks-garage.com/, and look at the shop manual, IGN-02, Speed and Reference Sensors - Checking, Replacement, and AdjustmentThis will show that both sensors are on top of the bell housing and give you the info on repacing them. there is also a trouble shooting section that may help.

RE: Cranks, but no start
Forgive me I was thinking of the later spec.
