Exhaust Leak??

My 84 944 doesn't currently have the shift boot because it was old and shredded up, so all that i have is the insulating boot which also has open cracks because of it's age. My problem is that when driving there is alot of winding noise emitting and also there is air blowing from the cracks. When the windows open up (which is pretty often without my a/c working), it draws even more airflow from the shifter. When I stop driving I can cleary see what looks like smoke streaming slowly from it. Any help is awesome!

RE: Exhaust Leak??

For your own safety you do need to get the Boot Fixed effectively. If you do have an exhaust leak you could be getting Carbon Monoxide in the car and this stuff can kill you, or it it makes you sleepy so you kill yourself while driving. So please fix the Boot.
You need to get the car safely on stands and check the exhaust system from underneath to see if there is a leak.
This will also enable you to see if there is a small engine oil leak somewhere which is dripping or blowing oil onto the hot exhaust.
Best Regards Big Bob

Not really sure what the question is here. You know exactly what is wrong. Replace the inner rubber boot, and put on a new shift boot, and your problem will go away.

RE: Exhaust Leak??

Thanks. I'm planning on buying a new boot, but I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't something worsethat couldn't be fixed by getting the new boot.
