G1 Instument Light Prollems

Does anyone have any idea what the technical term is for the little bulb sockets in the 83-85 Christmas-tree gauge?

http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/...6464192000.jpg

I have the part number from the PET (900 631 132 90), but I can't find anyone who'll call it by any kind of industry term...
I think it's a "B8 Series" Twist-on socket, but I can't guess at the exact number.

Any help or direction would be awesome.

Also, has anyone heard of an over-voltage problem when replacing the incandescent bulbs with LED?
I bought a whole bunch of T5's earlier this year and swapped every bulb not soldered down (10+). As of right now, only one is left alive.
I've been meaning to break out the multimeter and test sockets, but pulling the dash apart is a b*tch, so I'm procrastinating.
I know they're getting power, but I'm afraid it may be too much. Either that or I bought a bad batch of Chinese junk.

If you don't get the resistance right, you will fry the dimmer switch and more. Some guys have done it successfully without problems, others not so much.

I'm not sure about the switch, but the lights are failing prematurely.

I've yet to see an LED advertised with the resistance specified... or a failure rate for that matter.

BTW, that was far from helpful advice coming from a guy calling himself "doc". ;)

It isn't the LED that has the resitor, you usually need to add resistors inline when upgrading to LED's.

Negative. The T5's have a small resistor inline hidden inside the plastic base.
I didn't look at the value, but I'd guess by the size at it being no more than 50Ω... prolly closer to 10

I suppose I could break out the magnifier and figure the bands if anyone is interested...
