HAS ANYONE PUT IN SHORTSHIFTERS?

hey ive got a 1988 944 turbo S and i feel like the shifter is kinda sloppy, its got a really long throw, anyone know of any good shortshifters? or another way to decrease the sloppyness of the shifter?

RE: HAS ANYONE PUT IN SHORTSHIFTERS?

The sloppiness can be in one of two areas.

1. The shifter stalk that the knob is on is worn out. There is a horizontal cylinder welded to it that will wear over time and become football-shaped. You can buy a new stalk, clips, and bushings and do the job yourself in about an hour. Cost will be around $60 or so.

2. The shifting mechanics on the rear connected to the tranny are worn out. You could get a short shift kit to replace, although I am not certain on price or availability.

More than likely just fixing #1 will make a huge improvement in shift quality.

Yes, it applies for all of the 924-968 cars. The part can be purchased and viewed here:

When you order it, don't forget to tell them you need the lower bushing, the washer, and the circlip. It's a good idea to replace all of that when you are in there and those parts are cheap.

By the way, don't be fooled by the "short shifter" that some folks sell that consists of nothing more than a shortened shifter stalk. You can accomplish teh same thing by just grabbing ahold of the stock shifter lower on the shaft. There is no advantage to using one of those.

The short shifter to get is the one that mounts to the tranny and it WILL make a difference.
