ignition switch won't stay ingaged

I posted a reply to an older forum that may have not drown any attention. The problem I am having is my ignition switch will not stay engaged fully to keep the car running. You can hold it ever so lightly and the engine will run but if you let go the motor will shut off until you re-start it. Question is that this is a key housing and a ignition switch. Which one needs to be changed or is it both or is it a deeper problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

It is probably the electrical portion of the switch which attaches to the key mechanism on the back via some small screws. Replace it and you problem will go away. On the early cars, it is known to crack and not function properly. If you crawl under the dash, you should be able to pull off the electrical connector off the back, and see the small screws you need to pull to remove the plastic section.

That sounds easier than what my Haynes repair manual says. It starts off by removing the steering wheel. I will do this next week. I guess I will have to order this unit, don't guess this would be an item the local auto place would carry. In either case I will let you know next week how this went.
Thanks for the advice.

I don't believe I will be able to get to this underneath the dash. This will be my weekend job to pull the steering wheel to get to this. I will do this, this weekend before ordering the part. I will let you know how it goes.
thanks

This was not a bad job getting the switch removed. I have ordered the electrical portion to replace. After getting this part out it is very clear as to why the switch would not stay engaged.
Thanks for your help once again.

:) Got the part in, replaced and driven. It is so nice to drive my 944 and not worry about it shutting down. Thanks for the great advice. This saved me time and money.
thanks again,
