The weight of the stock na motor and the LS1 are very similar, so it doesn't throw off the balance really at all from what i have heard. A 968 motor would fit of course with the 968 DME and motor mounts etc, but you won't pick up a 3.0 motor from a 968 for under about 4k. The 944 cylinders are nikasil lined, so boring them out gets very expensive very quickly, and there are only a few people in the US that I would let do it.

The Rover V8 is also very light for it's size, as the block is alloy. This type of V8 is the most popular V8 in the U.K. (Originaly from a Buick) Rover used to supply them (Untuned) to T.V.R., Morgan, Range Rover, M.G. etc. From the U.K.s point of view, this is the best V8 to do a swap with as the spares are easy to come by and you can pick up a full engine very cheaply, if it's untuned, you could get one for free if you looked hard enough.

I don't think the Rover V8 would be worth anything over an LS1. As you say it is an old Buick design - now vastly updated, but it is rather small (less than five liters) and not much lighter if at all (don't know about the modern ones, the original 215 cubic inch one is no doubt a lightweight in both pounds and HP).

LS1s are cheap now. Even LS6s that need little refurbishment can be had for under $4k. Parts are plentiful and cheap.

I love it how you yanks think that 4.8ltr engine is small. Here in ol' blighty we think that a 3.5ltr engine is big. You are right about the Rover V8 being a little out dated, but I was talking about the availability of V8 engines/parts in the U.K. (Not very many British cars ever started life with a V8 and the ones that did usually had the Rover unit fitted, the gas costs to much here!)
