Losing prime

I have a '83 944 that intermitantly has no oil pressure on cold start ups for 10 to30 seconds. I changed the oil (Mobil 1 15w50) and filter (bosche), and it didn't do it for about two months. But it seems to have started up again. When it doesn't do it cold idle pressure pegs the gauge. Hot idle pressure is about two bar. It seems to be losing its oil pump prime. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Another problem I'm having (also intermitant) is a knocking sound in the rear under acceleration. It just started the other day and I haven't realy had a chance to get it on the rack and look at it, but any ideas would be welcome. Thanks again.

Bill

RE: Losing prime

Hi Bill,

What you describe when it doesn't lose prime is perfectly normal. I would double check to make sure your front crank bolt is torqued to 155ft/lbs. If that is tight and it continues to do it, then I would expect the Oil Pressure Relief Valve (OPRV) to be gumming up and starting to stick.

For the knock, I would start by checking the condition of your CV joints on both sides (inner and outer)
