Mysterious aluminium bit
 

Hi, foz here again, as an aside, my Father removed the airflow meter from his '87 944s, and seems to be left with this rather odd looking piece of aluminium. Does any one recognise what it might be, and more importantly, where it might go.

I don't recognize this from the pic, but a couple of questions might help track it down. First, what size is it, we have no dimensional reference to make a comparison by from the picture. Secondly, did it come from inside the afm, or was it sitting around on teh engine after the AFM was removed?

I'd post this question on the 944 forums at rennlist, I'd bet someone there would be able to answer this question.

Well, sh944. The story of my fathers 944s continues. Saturday just gone, I put on my overalls and started. After linking out dme relay, swapping ignition module, decided inlet manifold must come off to get at tdc sensor. Removed manifold, and found where disc came from. Underneath the manifold there are 3 holes that are blanked off. One of these holes was open, and the disc was from it. Reason 1 the car will not start. Both of the knock sensors were severely damaged, and now I have access to the tdc sensor I will change this too. One last thing, the engine speed sensor is not linked into the dme, it stops on a blanked off connector. Does the tdc sensor on later cars provide engine speed aswell as position?.

Are you talking about the reference sensor that mounts at the rear of the engine on top of the bellhousing? The speed sensor is used for diagnostic purposes only on a 944S, IIRC and the car should run without it being connected, altho its a good idea, imo, to connect it. The ref sensor provides the timing mark for firing the injectors. If thats not connected, its a major reason why your dad's car won't run. Also IIRC, the car should run if the knock sensors are damaged, as long as the wires themselves are still connected.
