Need engine advice

I know you cant say anything for certain without seeing it yourself, but I would like some opinions on what to do.

I bought an 85' N/A 944, as a project car with my dad. The previous owner told us we had a blown headgasket(as coolant was mixing with the oil), so we replaced that, fired it up, and the problem was not solved. We jumped to the conclusion that the block must be cracked or something.

That was almost 4 years ago now, and it has been sitting in storage since then. I have built up a good savings base, was getting ready to dive back in to the car, and so was pricing local shops for engine swap quotes. The shop asked why, we chatted, and he said the oil cooler could be the culprit, a much cheaper fix.

In researching online about this, I found that its recommended to replace the rod bearings as well in these circumstances.

Now I worry that the 4 years of sitting with the gunky coolant/oil mix inside the engine may have ruined it, even if I replace the oil cooler and rod bearings. Does anyone have any helpful input, advice, or experience for me on what to do in this situation?

Also I see that you have to back to page 3 (2013!) to see a thread with any actual replies on this part of the forum. Really hope someone is here to assist.
