New to the 944.
 

Hey everyone ive been looking around for a car lately , i just found a 1988 porsche 944 auto. The person selling wants around 3000 for this car , the paint in brand new , interior is decent. The only thing is the odometer says 140000 but the motor is a swapped with less miles. Not sure how many he does not know. I just want to know if it seems like a good deal , and how is it to mantain ? I am totally new to these cars , any tips or anything would be appreciated.

Best thing you can do is spend a couple hundred bucks and get a PPI done on the car, by someone who knows what they are looking for. It will save you in the long run. 3k is probably about right for the car though if everything is in order. Big ticket items that can really burn you if there are no previous records: Clutch...will run 2.5k to have someone do it if it goes out, about $6-700 doing it yourself. Timing belts....doesnt matter when there were done, as soon as you buy the car, you change timing belts, h20 pump, rollers. Broken T belts and smashed valves are very common with these cars...another 2.5-3k to fix if it goes.

So my advice, since you dont know much about 944's yet, have someone look at the car that knows these cars inside and out, it can really save your butt.....

Thanks for the information , i just purchased the car only its a 1985. My friend checked it out and all seems well , but the things i am starting to notice are , the car was at idle today in my driveway started pouring out white smoke i drove it and it seemed to stop. The car was sitting for a while so i hope thats all it is.

White smoke is generally coolant related.
