New owner need help ('86 turbo)
 

Hello all. I've been looking for a 944 for over a year and finally got a '86 turbo this week. Really nice car, fell in love at the first test-drive!

Now, as much as i love her, she's not perfect. I've ordered myself CD copy of the factory manuals. But here are something that I am looking for clues to, will appreciate a lot of any inputs:

- Idling....sometimes it's ~1100 RPM, sometimes would go up to 2000 RPM. Happens even when fully warmed up. What's going on?

- Boost gauge not working. Prev owner had no idea why...

- Parking brake is not holding the car

the idling could be your TPS

get an after market boost gauge installed (looks cool too ;-))

there is a little trick to fixing the parking break thing, my dad should me a while back and i could SHOW you, but i cant, sorry, lol, check search google for "parking break fix"

Yeah - check the throttle at the throttle body, when going from 0 throttle to a little or back to 0 - moving the throttle cam with your hand, you should be able to hear a faint 'click'. if not, its probably adjusted improperly. I believe there is a thing at www.clarks-garage.com that will show you how to adjust it.

The jumpy idle is usually a sign of an intake leak somewhere after the throttle body. Check all the vacuum hoses and the larger intake-hoses that go to the idle-stablizer and vacuum venturi under the intake manifold.

What does the boost-guage show? Just 1.0-bar? Check the clear vacuum line between the #3 & #4 intake-manifold runners. The hose could be broken or leaking, which would cause your erratic idle.

Pull back the carpeting behind the parking-brake handle. You'll see an adjustment for the cable. Tighten up the cable (pull more of it through).

I'VE NOTICED THAT WHEN A PORSCHE IDLES CRAZY THAT THERES PROBABLY AND INTAKE LEAK, WHAT I WOULD DO IS START THE CAR AND WITH A CAN OF CARB/CHOKE CLEANER SPRAY AROUND THE INTAKE AND ALL THE RUBBER HOSES IF THE IDLE CHANGES OR THE CAR DIES WHEN YOU SPRAY A CERTIAN AREA YOU'VE FOUND THE LEAK. GOOD LUCK

I would check the TPS first as well. If it does not click, it will definitely have an erratic high idle. Then if that is fine, go after the vacuum leaks like has been suggested.
