New to the Porsche world
Just bought a 1986 944 with 91k. Everything works except the sun roof. She runs good...not a lot of power. All stock and in great condition...interior is almost perfect. I paid 4k. I think it was a good deal. I wanted a manual but this car was so clean I went with it. I am thinking about intake, exhaust and chip....recommendations?

Don't bother trying to spend money on exhaust, or intake. If you want a different sound, you can weld on a different muffler, but you won't see any gains besides sound. There is no intake for your car (stay away from those cone filters that replace they airbox). Chip wise, you can get around 10hp by going with FR Wilk's chips. You can google his website.
Instead, put the money into your suspension, that is where the car will be the most fun. |

The '86 I just bought has the airbox replaced, why do you recommend not to do that and should I consider trying to change it back?

Will an '87 airbox fit on a n '86? This is good info.....it may explain why the car runs warm and on a really hot day it was on the edge of overheating.

Well, the hot air isn't going to drastically change the temperature of the engine (at least not enough to where the fans and waterpump can't counter that effect). You may want to make sure your fans are kicking on. Depending on what fan switch is in the radiator, the car should either run around the 1st mark, or the 2nd mark on the temp gauge. I like the run the cooler switch personally.

The fans definitely kick on. It runs at just above the top hashmark but the other day we had around 100 deg and it climbed to just below the overheat mark, and actually flickered the warning light a couple of times, which I than cranked up the heat to lower it a few degrees. What temp is the cooler fan switch set for so I can look for one?

I think they run 60-65, 70-75, and 77-82. Remember to get the gasket when you get the new switch
