The brakes will clean themselves up as you drive, the rust isn't an issue. Just take it easy and go out somewhere that you can drive around dragging the brakes slightly, do some mild the moderate then hard braking if the brakes feel good and are stopping like they should. A good run around town, and you should have shiney rotors again :)

RE: Newbie Questions........ Please Help
I want to thank everyone for the good tips also. I just purchased a '85 944 that has been sitting a long long time.
One question: If I crank it by hand and that action itself breaks the timing belt, do you think I can hurt things? Or... just go easy & if it stops turning, STOP TURNING! |
RE: Newbie Questions........ Please Help
If your intent is literally to turn it by hand via a wrench and socket on the crank, that would not be a significant risk if the engine moves reasonably easily when you start to turn it.
If the engine seems siezed when you apply the torque, then you might want to do some lubtication of the bores etc through the plug holes and leaveit to soak before attempting another turn. The Porsche Docs recommendation is that if the engine has been standing for a long while then a new belt is mandatory. So get the engine turning by hand is one thing, but to try and run it up on the starter motor that is a definite no no until the belt has been changed. Big Bob |

Alrighty. I'll add some cylinder lube... Marvel Mystery oil is my weapon of choice unless someone thinks of a better one.... let it sit a day or three & give it a try.
Thank you! |
