piston rings
anyone know a rough estimate of what it would cost to get the piston rings changed on a '84 non turbo?

RE: piston rings
would it just be more logical to do an engine swap?

RE: piston rings
I can probably figure out the time for you when i get to the shop in the morning. I dont have the manual handy right now. It will not be cheap. It's 13 hours to remove and replace the head, i think it is 8 hours for rod bearings, so i am guessing off the top of my head 25 hours or so.

RE: piston rings
If you think you need rings why not just rebuild the whole engine at that point?
|
RE: piston rings
well i'm not sure what i need exactly, i was told rings. but if it was rings would it not smoke in the low rpms, but as soon as you hit the high rpms smoke like crazy?

RE: piston rings
First things first, get a leakdown and a compression test done. This will give us a better idea of what is going on.

RE: piston rings
I was told by a different person it could be valves instead of rings. That would be lots cheaper to get replaced right?

RE: piston rings
As Sherlock Holmes said, it is a mistake to hypothesize in advance of the facts. Get the compression and leadown tests, etc. then more data: does it smoke on startup? when cold as mcuh a warmed up, etc.
