Reversed Polarity on '83 944

Hi,

I've had my '83 since new and rarely drive it. Due to this fact I often recharge the battery (yes, with it connected in the car). One day I reversed the polarity on the charger-connection to the battery and plugged the charger in. I immediately knew what happened and disconnected the charger. Since then the Porsche hasn't started. It turns over fine but won't start. I've checked the fuses (all OK) but have done nothing with the relays. The dealer says that the relay associated with the engine computer may have died. However, he couldn't remember where the relay is. Any ideas from this sagacious group?

Thanks,

Jim

Hi ya Jim, I would try changing relays also. Do you know anyone with a 944 that would let you swap the relays until you came across the correct one?

Failing that, I'd get an auto electrician to look at it!

Good luck!!!

Swap out your DME relay first since it is 20 bucks. If that doesn't do it, it is possible you fried the DME. I would strongly advise spending 40 bucks on a trickle charger/battery maintainter that is already hooked up to your battery. When you park the car, you just connect the 2 cords and leave it. Letting a battery discharge from not using it, then charging it back up over and over again will shorten the lifespan of the battery greatly.

Gents,

I tested the DME relay with a multimeter and it tested fine. Do you have any other ideas?

Thanks,

Jim

Does the tach bounce when you are cranking the car? There should be slight movement.
