Steering Vibration - Help!
 

Hi
I have a 1989 944 Lux owned from new.It is only used very occasionally and has coved 38,000 miles.Recently I put on a new set of reburbished Design 90 wheels and new tyres. The wheels were balanced andtracking was within tolerances.
In normal city driving the car is fine, but, when the speed reaches above 40mph, the steering wheel vibrates harshly. If I increase speed to 50+ the whole car starts shaking.I checked the wheel balance and tracking agin and they are fine. Does anyone know what the problem is? Incidently, thewheels came from a 944S2 which has a front wheel offset of 55. The spec for my model is a 52 offset. Can this be the problem?

I would throw on a different set of wheels and tires and see if it goes away. The tires can be balance, but still flat spotted, which will cause a vibration like that.

Thank you for your suggestion. The set of tyresare new and I have not had to break hard on them. However, I will put the old set of wheels and tyres on and see if the vibration is still there.

Hi Doc
The problem with the vibration was caused by a seized front brake caliper. Whilst investigating the technician also found 3 of the 4 new P6000's were out of shape. After the caliper was cleaned up and the old tyres put back on, the car is as good as new again.

My front brake disc has discouloured from theheat. Will this cause a problem in normal driving?

The old brake disc should be fine with some stop and go city driving.
