Temperature issues

First post here. I just bought an '84 944 NA tobuild for NASA 944 Spec racing. I've only found one real problem so far, hoping to get some help from you all...

The temp gauge moves to Hot range, sometimes all the way over. The guy I bought it from says he took it to a mechanic who said it was a gauge issue, that the car was running in normal temp range. Said he's been driving it that way for so long that it would surely haveblown upby now if it was really overheating. But I'm still worried I might be hurting the motor.

- It doesn't seem to be a wiring/ground problem because the gauge moves slowly, not instant pegging over.
- The cooling fans come on after it heats up, so I'd think the thermo-fan switch is ok.
- The fans shut on/off when thekey is turned on/off...??
- The radiator feels hot, so it seemes to be getting coolant past the thermostat.
- There is no backflow or overboiling in the tank, and no physical signs of overheating.

Any ideas? Any help is appreciated.

RE: Temperature issues

Have you tried a new temp sensor?

RE: Temperature issues

no, haven't tried the sensor. I guess that the easiest fix to try first. I think first I'm going to borrow a laser thermometer and see how hot the block actually is when it's showing hot.
i'll report back...
