Tow bars?
 

So the old girl's broken down again. Throw-out bearing, I think. Not something I feel comfortable attempting. I towed it home with a tow strap, but it's illegal to do that on the roads here. Tow trucks get expensive, and I might like to take it to a few different mechanics. My usual tranny guy typed the problem into a computer program, and it told him labor would be $600, which sounded high to me. So I was thinking about buying a tow bar like this one:

I've never used one before. Question is: will this work with my 944? Do I need special brackets that attach to the Porsche?

No, you won't be able to use anything like that to tow it with unfortunately. You will need to flat bed it or use a tow dolly. $600 on a throwout bearing for labor is very good, the job will book out at about 12+ hours. Then there are all the while you are in there parts, like replacing the entire clutch. The TOB is about $150, or get the entire sachs clutch package for about $700. Vertex auto has a power friction clutch kit that is actually quite a bit cheaper and I have used them with good results. Also if the clutch fork is showing wear, you will want to replace that, and it isn't cheap either. Same with the clutch fork pin, pilot bearing, throwout bearing tube, etc.
