Very Important! help
 
86 944 Turbo. I Am Racing PCA Labor Day At Road American And Need To Fix This Problem! The Car Will Run Great - Then After It Gets Beat On It Starts Popping And Spuddering. And It's Only When You Let Off, Wont Idle Or Restart Sometimes, Until It Cools Down... WOP Is Not An Issue. I WOuld Love To Have A Professional Fix It, But It's Not an Issue Until I Get On The Track And Beat It Up A While - No Overheating, No Noticed Voltage Loss, And Judging By The Pop I Am Guessing It's Not Fuel Related, I Can't Recreate The Problem On The Street To See Whats Dropping Out. I Realy Don't Know Where To Start, I Am Hoping Someone Has Heard Of This Issue Before.

I would start checking for vacuum leaks, change your DME relay, and check your speed and reference sensors. Since it is not a WOT problem, I am going to assume it is not overboost related. Check your J boot and all vacuum lines very close for cracking. Check the backside of the turbo to intercooler rubber hose and make sure that has not split on the backside.

Know what the DME chip is but don't know where the relay would be located.

The relay is in the fuse panel under the hood, near the drivers side window in a black box. Look on the backside of the lid, and it should show you what position it is in. It is one of the relays nearest the drivers side, and towards the rear. Should be a black square relay, fairly tall. May be called ignition relay, or fuel pump relay, or DME relay on the skematics, I can't remember. It should have a 993 part number on it. If it has a 944 part number on it, it is a very old relay, as the relay was updated to the 993 relay in the 90's.
