Water temperature sensor question. . .

ok, i really need advice from you guys out there that have an early car with a later motor in it. Here is my situation. I have an 83 944 with an 87 engine in it. I was in the middle of taking off the intake when i noticed that the water temperature sensor had no wires running to it. It is my understanding that the 83 and 87 water temperature sensors have different connections and are not compatible. So, what i am going to do is run wires to an after market water temp. guage. But now i have a problem locating the correct kind of guage to use. I have been told that the voltage (or the ohms) on the sensor need to mach the voltage (or the ohms) on the guage. I know that the guages on the early cars were manufactured by VDO. So would a VDO water temperature guage work fine (electric of course)??

What do you guys think I would really really appreciate your help! I know you guys will pull through for me

Why not just install an early style sensor in the late block? Or vise versa depending on which sensor you use. Early is a 1 wire sensor, late is a 2 wire sensor.

Ok, if i did use an early sensor, where should i run the single wire?? To a new gauge or to the existing one?
