Weird electrical/starter problem
My son and I recently bought a 1986 944 NA to tinker around with. This morning, my son went to start the engine and the starter began but did not engage the engine. When he shut the ignition switch off the starter motor kept whirring. We had to disconnect the battery to stop the starter motor. We carefully checked the ignition switch for a short but it appears to be functioning appropriately. A very weird problem I have not seen posted on any other forum. Thanks in advance!

RE: Weird electrical/starter problem
Sounds like the starter itself is done. When you turn the key, the solenoid will turn the starter, the gear gets "spun" out to engage the flywheel.

I'm guessing the starter is malfunctioning, as well. Its possible its a grounding issues, but that would not be the first thing I would suspect.

Bump (again... *sigh*) to bury another thread that has less value than this one...

RE: Weird electrical/starter problem
Similar problem with my wife's Chevy. Ignition switch was sticking (no doubt from the soda she spilled while driving) That was keeping the starter engaged. Had to take the steering column apart to clean it all up. Have you guys looked into any of the suggestions that Scott had?
