what makes 944 better?
 

i own a nissan 240 with an sr20det and all that jazz. im getting bored with it and im tired of all the welded diff drifting nonsense because i dont want to slam my car into a wall or get tickets for wreckless operation among the many other car/life destroying stereotypes that come with 240s. my dad had 3 944's. i love porsches and id like to get one, prefferably 944 turbo, 928, or 930. i wanna do track or road racing. i have done a lot of work to my nissan and i would like to get something that would be even specs just porsche. such as rust. where are the rust points on these cars? i dont know how much horse the nissan puts out but i would like to get something equal. its about 235 im guessing. does the 944 turbo put out that much and is it easy to modify from stock? and for track racing aspects, what is involoved with a solid suspension setup? and cost? i have coilovers on the 240 and it handles great. id like to get it to handle just as good in a porsche.

The 944 when setup properly is a fantastic handling car, which is why it is still extremely popular in race series today. The only problem is that they are 25 years old and cheap, which means a lot of people can afford to buy them, and do....but then can't afford the maintenance on them, so the cars get into a delapidated state quickly. If you can find a good solid car to start modifying though, they can be extremely satisfying. The 1986-1988 944 turbo had 217hp, with the 1988 Turbo S and the 1989 Turbo having 247hp. Getting rid of the cat is worth 25hp, a chip will add another 30-40hp, etc.

The 944 body was galvanized which resists the rust much more so than other cars. Most of the suspension etc, is aluminum in the turbos, so that won't rust. I have seen on very rare occasion some rust on the lower rockers, but that is extremely rare if the car was cared for at all, so rust really isn't an issue.

A good coilover system will run you about $2000-4000 new, but you can find them for half that used fairly easy. You want bigger sway bars (weltmeister 28f/22r) as well.
