CV joint Boots
 

Hi All! I need some help. Yesterday, while changing oil in my 2001 Boxster S (with 50,001 miles) I saw that all 4 of the boots over the CV joints were torn! GOT TO FIX!
Need to know best way to replace them....New assembles, split boots or what.
Does anyone know how hard of a job it is, and step by step instructions? Is it time consuming or expensive if I have a garage do it?
At one time on other carsd, I noticed it was, believe it or not, it was more reasonable to purchase complete remanufactured assemblies, rather than just new boots!

Well, you can drop the end off the transaxle side, remove the joint, then remove the boot on that end, and remove the boot on the outer end. Then slide the new boots over the inner end of the shaft and install them that way. This all assumes the joints are still in good shape. IIRC you will have to drop some of the subframe out of the car to get the axle to hang down low enough. Or you can remove the axle entirely to reboot them, but the axle nut holding the outer end to the hub is torqued down to about 400ft/lbs.

How is the clamp removed form where the boot attaches to the transmission side? It looks like a real bugger to get to.

How do I get to the boot clamp at the transmission side? It looks like a very tight space.
Is there a step by step proceedure anywhere, without buying a shop manual?

Should be able to use a screw driver to pop the clamp off. To reinstall those crimp clamps, you will also need a special crimp pliers. I am sure most auto parts stores will carry them.
