Looking for a Boxster
Hello buddies,
I have a BMW M3 E46 with which I am quite happy but I would like to buy a Boxster. Since it would be my first Porsche and I do not know the brand, I would like to help me to find a good one and tell me the purchase price and to check key details as well as vehicle maintenance. What is your budget that you can spend on the car. What is your budget for maintenance? This will help us narrow down possible choices throughout the 986 and 987 line of Boxsters. I also have an e46 M3, car is a blast to drive. |
Hi Doc, my budget is between 15.000 and 30.000 $, more or less. Logically if I buy a good and modern car my budget for maintenance will be less.
What do you believe. MAybe a more powerfull Porsche? Congratulations, I will never sale my brave M3!!! Very interesting your blog. Thanks, Marc |
You are on the right track with buying as much car as you can with the given budget. You want to leave a little cushion just in case you need some work on something, but that is a pretty good budget to work with. I haven't followed the values of the 987 boxster very closely, but if you can get into one, I would go for it. The interior is a lot nicer, and the body looks better IMHO. At 30k, you are borderline into cayman territory as well.

Yes Doc, I think a I have a reasonable budget and enough time for getting a good Boxster. I think Cayman is very expensive, maybe is better to pay 30k for a 993, dont you think?

I think the 993 would be another fantastic option. The only thing I do recommend with the 993 though is a pre purchase inspection with a leakdown test and a compression test. The engine did have valve guide issues on occasion, which lead to excessive leakdown numbers and reduced horsepower. The only other major issue with the 993 is the 96+ obdII cars had secondary air injection port clogging issues on occasion that would throw the CEL. The 95's were OBDI and did not have the CEL light, so while they still suffer the same issues, there is no light to trigger. The SAI is only active on startup and acts to inject a small amount of additional air into the exhaust to "thin" the exhaust fumes out for emissions purposes on startup. So clogged ports are not a big deal unless you have the 96+ cars which would give you a check engine light to stare at, lol. Overall the 993 is a ton of fun, and the last of the aircooled and traditional body style 911's. They will hold their value better than the boxsters, 996, 997, and caymans.

Yes Doc, no doubt: I prefer a deep inspected 993 than a Cayman, Boxster, etc.. Surely in the future a 993 is still very interesting and exciting. I'll continuos looking for a good opportunity. I'd like very much an aircooled and body classic 993.
