oil change

Hi guys,
I bought a 1998 Boxster last year (first sports car) and I am up for my first oil change. The local Porsche dealership charges $130 for an oil/filter change. I called a local gas station and they gave me a price for half that. Same oil-Mobil 1 synthetic. Am I missing something? Any tips would be appreciated, thanks.

RE: oil change

Dealers can charge up to $250 for an oil change on a porsche I am afraid. Boxster requires about 10 quarts of 0-40 mobil 1 and 1 filter OC 128 (and a crush seal for the drain plug). There is nothing special about the boxster.

Hey I just had my oil changed in the boxster at the local porsche dealership called Phaff in Canada and it cost about $230 talk about a kick in the ass.. Ya any way if anyone knows how to do the oil change or which is the easiest way to access the filter and drain plug with just a floor jack *if possible* it would be greatly appreciated. Anyway we did buy porsches we shouldn't be surprised at the prices.

We are also a Porsche performance shop. An oil change on a boxster should take 9 qts of oil and since it is synthetic it should run you over $100 for the change with oil, filter, and labor to change it. I doubt that other shop can do it for half that because the oil cost more than half.

Our local dealer does synthetic mobil 1 oil changes for 59.95. You can look it up on their website (aristocrat motors)

If that is labor and all they are doing it cheap. The oil cost more than that. At least it does here anyways.

I brought my 2003 Boxster for the 15,000 mile service/oil change. The dealer told it was not a simple oil change. My Porsche needs the suspension to be lubricated and all fluids checked. The top needs to be checked also. He told me $726.00 for the service. I left and took it to my mechanic. $80 to do all the work and he laughed about lubricating my suspension! My mechanic also checked all the fluids (took him about 2 minutes). Brakes were checked and he sent me off with $646 still in my pocket.

The moral of the story, watch out for the dealers. This isn't the first time they've tried to overcharge me.

Unfortunetly they take advantage of a lot of people who wouldn't know any better :( Us independant shops are the way to go sometimes :)

I am also a technician but I work on hevy equipments. I can share a similar story about the dealer. I took one of my familys company service truck for an oil change at the dealer because it was still under warranty but I drew a small white line with white paint markeron where the engine is connected to the oil filter. They said that they changed the oil but the white line are still connected and the oil filter was untouched. Im not saying that all dealers will try and cheat you (especially cars such as porsches) but there are people that take advantage.

RE: oil change

I just read another post, where the dealer was charging $900 for 2 front tires and alignment? They also were quoted crazy prices for other repairs. I think its so important to find a good mechanic at an independent shop. You don't have to pay for all the overhead and a good mechanic will repair what needs to be repaired and not bump your bill for extra $$.

Definitely get the Mahle Filter or Porsche filter (it will come with a new o ring) and Crush Seal. IIRC, they are about $20 from the dealer. Part number is 996.107.225.53 or OC-128 Mahle.

RE: oil change

I paid about 120 for the complete oil change....They said it was because of the fact that the car took a little more oil that usual? and the price of the labor..

I went ot a local Jiffy Lube.
