944 / 924 Dilemma
 

Hi..
a few months ago I picked up a88 924S for my girlfriend. Iliked it so much I went and picked upa 88 944, Both cars are in good shape, but just like any car you get used they need little things here and there.

Here is the dilemma; I would like to make one of them in to a little street racer. but I am not sure witch one. I am new to the Porsche world, so I am asking for suggestions / Pro's / Con's ... ect..

The 944 NA will never be much of a stoplight to stoplight car. IE, any modern day minivan will out accelerate it. There isn't really anything you can do power wise for the engines either, short of pulling the motor and transplanting a 944 turbo engine, which is a huge undertaking. I would upgrade the suspension in either one (the 924S is a lighter chassis), and have fun in the twisties. It will still corner with the best of them.

I realize is near-traitorous to suggest this, but if you truly want a street muscle champ, you can transplant a GM LS-series V8 into a 944 rather easily: believe it or not, it's not any heavier when its done but has more than twice the torque and HP. LS1s have been around for ten years now so they are plentiful and cheap, although only 345-350 HP, and LS2s cost only a bit more and have an honest, SAE rated 400 HP. Not exotic maybe, but they are light, compact, and anvil-reliable.

Google and do some reserach: there are kits and suggestions galore. For a 944 transplant, make sure you get one out of a 'vette or Camaro or GTO, not an iron block out of an Escalade or Silverado. You have to take the engine and the trans too make it easy, but its fairly straightforward, mayube $8K tops if you do some of the work yourself.
