Default New wheels/tires for 996

I have a 2004 996 C2 with 18" Carrera wheels(18x8" (50mm offset)with Michelin Pilot Sport Rib 225/40 on the front, 18x10" (65mm offset) with 285/30 on the rear). The car has PSS9s and is 40mm lower than the stock M030 suspension was. I'm considering a separate wheel/package for track days only and would like to hear advice or experiencefrom others, especially on widths and spacers.

Front: Volk TE37 18x8.5" wheels (49mm offset)with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 235/40 (Volk doesn't make an 8" wide TE37).

Rear: Volk TE37 18x10" wheels (59mm offset) with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 285/30...OR...
Rear (alternate): Volk TE37 18x11" wheels (60mm offset)with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 295/30.

I'm reasonably confident of the front fitment, but I wonder about the rears if I go to 11" width. If I'm thinking correctly (which is not a foregone conclusion!), the 5mm offset deficit vs stock would move the wheel centerline 5mm closer to the hub face, i.e., 5mmcloser to the wheel well. Then the 12.5mm per side width increase would push the wheel face another 12.5mmout into the wheel well. Assuming a couple degrees of negative camber for track days, the top of the tire would tilit in about 11mm vs zero camber, so thewheel/tire face (at the top of the tire) wouldbe 5 + 12.5 - 11 = 6.5mm closer to the fender lip. Is my math correct?

Are the 11" rearwheels viable? If so, should I consider a spacer with them?

As for the fronts, what about running 225/40s with the 8.5" wide wheels? I assume it's no problem, but advice is welcome.

Happy New Year.

Your math looks OK, but the "safety" envelope you are looking at is small, and under track conditions and cornering the forces and hitting a minor bump, or running a track kerbmay give a problem still.
I'm pretty sure that one of the Wheel and Tyre Packages that the UK based Porscheshop provide includes a 19inch by11.00 inch Rear Victor Equipment Wheelespecially for Porsche and the 996 Carrera (2). E Mail Paul at yourcar@porscheshop.co.uk and ask him to confirm the front and rear wheel widths of his Victor Equipment and Yokohama Tyre set deals.

Thanks Big Bob. I also posted a similar query on the PCA technical forum site. It turns out the 996 C2 and GT3 have the same fender dimensions. The 996 GT3 uses the following wheel/tire fitments:
Front: 8.5x18" wheel, 40mm offset, 235/40ZR18 tire.
Rear: 11x18" wheel, 63mm offset, 295/30ZR18 tire.

Using a 7mm spacer on the Volk front wheel will bring offset to 42mm, close enough to the GT3 setup. No spacer is required for the rear.

There is less room in the front than in the rear. Lowering the car doesn't help matters, but the PSS9s are smaller diameter than the stock spring/damper setup, so it will all fit fine, especially with track-friendly camber settings. I ordered the package last week (got the 11" rear wheels) and will have them installed next week at a local shop that specializes in performance suspensions and alignment. We are going to experiment with the alignment to see what is best, and I'll let you know what I find.

One thing I like about the Volks is the weight. My stock cast Carrera classic wheels weigh 20 pounds each in the front and 23.4 pounds each in the rear. The Volks weigh 18 pounds front and 20 pounds rear, and they have a reputation for being very strong. Coupled with the lighter track tires, even going to bigger wheels and tires and adding spacers, I'll save about 15.5 pounds of unsprung weight.

Regards.

Hi CMXI, I was talking to Paul at the Porscheshop today, and I was correct Victor Equipment do 19 inch wheels for the 996 Carrera 2and they are 8.5 inch at the front and 11 inch at the back. Check Victor Equipment out on the web lots of info.
Best regards Big Bob
