Default certified or not?

I did a search but found few opinions. I'm gearing up to get an '02 or '03 996 TT. Should I get a CPO from the dealer or a private party car and an inspection from a reputable mechanic? Also, what do you all think about the concept of the ECU reflash? (I realize it would void the warranty, flying in the face of the 1st question). Any opinions welcome. Thanks.

Either way is fine, just make sure you find an independant shop that knows the 996TT.

As far as flashing the ECU goes, there is something called the Manguson-Moss act. It states that a dealer can not deny a warranty claim based on an aftermarket modification, unless they can prove without a doubt that the modification cause the failure that the warranty is being claimed on. The dealers can not see what software is in the ECU, only the number of times the ECU has been flashed.

There are certain companies out there that throw check engine lights etc with their flashes. They are cheaper to purchase, but cheaper for a reason. Do your research carefully.

We install GIAC tuning, which will bring a TT about 70hp and 75tq with no CEL's. We have never had any issue with a dealer and one of our flashes.

Also available is a flash loader, of which you can switch back and forth between the stock ECU file and the performance file with a push of a button. In the stock mode, the performance file is completely undetectable.

Good info Doc. I am a bit familiar with the Moss-Magnusson act of 1974 (I believe). As for the GIAC stuff I need to learn more. Are the #s you posted whp gains? What's the cost at your shop? Is it a mail in ECU flash? Do you have a website? Thanks!
