Default Supercharger sound for un-superchaged 944

my early 85 is making an intermittent whirring sound. particularly noticable at idle.Ussually noticable after warmup. If I bring the rpm up a little bit then let it settle to idle it sometimes stops. If you have ever heard a sprint car supercharger - that's what it sounds like... kind of a rring..rring. rring sound. HELP Water pump? Belt?

I use a stethascope to determine where the sound is coming from. They are available at sears. probably elsewhere. get one with a metal probe so you can touch various parts while your engine is running. ei.alternator,w.pump,idler pulleys, etc. it should be obvious.

For what its worth.
