What porsche is the most reliable?

I'm looking for a porsche, not new maybe 80's-90's vintage, 911 or 944, which ones are fast and which ones to avoid?

PorscheDoc Sep 23, 2009 09:43 PM

wow, that couldn't be a more broad question. What is your budget?

Edit: And you don't need to put up the same post in every forum, so I am going to clear those out.

I would also like some detailed info about 80s and 90s vintage Porsches. After he posts his price range, I look forward to reading some responses. Thanks to all.

Good luck. A question like that really can't be answered.

Interestingly enough, he asked the exact same question......2 years ago.

Most I want to spend is $25,000. I want a 911 or a 968 what is a 951? Looking for a fast one, my fast is 5.0 seconds 0-60 and a 1/4 mile about 13 seconds. What would I be looking for? Can a 968 or a 911 do those times? If not can they be modified easily and still be reliable?

If you were in the market for a porsche with $25,000 to spend which route would you go? The ones with turbos, do they break down more than the non turbo models?

Please help, I don't know were to start you guys are the experts, don't let me buy the wrong one.

Well if you are looking for a 1/4 mile car, I can assure you a Porsche is the wrong car to get. They do not like hard launches (expensive things like to break when doing so), they are meant to be a fantastic road course car and not a go fast in a straight line car. A 968 is out of the question for those performance numbers, the right 911 would do it, but not anything in the 25k range.

Ther was An 88 930 turbo in E-bay for 24K very clean slant nose this would not disappoint.

PorscheDoc is absolutely right. Porsches are pretty fast in the 1/4 but this is hardly their forte. If you are serious about what you want, I'd advise buying a late model 'vette, or if you want real budget performance, a Camaro V8 from '98 or later -- from '98n forward they have the LS V8. These should cost you less than $10K to buy and put in first class "stock" condition: 0-60 in 5.3 and 1/4 in around 13.3. You then have about $15K to spend on modifications that will make it a 1/4 mile champion that no near-stock Porsche can challenge: $2800 for a bulletproof locker rear axle, another $3500 for a reinforced trans and drivetrain, givingn you the ability to use power, and leaving you $7500 or so for engine mods, which can add about 115 RWHP: a magnusen supecharger which will put an otherwise stock engine into the low 12s, or with a little fuss and tuning, into the high 11s.

My Camaro cost a bit more, but then in does in the high 9s; it is streetable, and it gets killed in the quarter once in a while by supercharged Vipers and much-modded Toyota Turbo Supras running 2-bar plus boost, but not by any Porsches.

Any 930 for mid to low 20's is going to need some fairly serious work $$$, especially a slant nose as they typically bring in a lot more money.
