Default 93 C4 Cab (964) engine cover foam

Working on my 1993, looking for an oil leak. The oil has saturated the foam that in on the inside of the engine cover and engine capsule. The question I have is what is the main purpose of the foam? To keep heat away from the engine, or for sound control? How critiacl is the foam? It is basically saturated with oil and not effective in that state anyway. Replacement ideas?

I believe it was for sound deadening purposes. I have seen it removed on many 964's without any ill effects.
