low coolant

low coolant
I have a 99 carrera with about 45K miles on it. I noticed the coolan light started to blink and check the level and it was low. Filled the coolant about 2-3 weeks ago and yesterday the coolant light started to blink again so checked the level again and it was pretty much empty. Does anyone have any idea what the most common problem causing this problem would be? Would really appreciate the help, and is it safe to have an independent porsche mechanic work on major work on the cars? Is there a way to see if they are really knowledgeable about the cars? Thank you

RE: low coolant
Have you seen any external leaks on the ground around the left rear tire. The coolant tanks are known for cracking on the very bottom, which will leave a puddle by the left rear tire. If there are no external leaks, then you better check your oil and make sure the coolant isn't getting into oil via a slipped cylinder liner or bad headgasket.

RE: low coolant
there is some fluid under the car next to the left rear tire. I think you are probably right. as always.
do you think an independent porsche mecahnic can fix the problem without problems? Should I take it to a dealer? Thank you.

RE: low coolant
Any independent mechanic should be able to handle it. The tank is about $125 IIRC, and a few hours to put it in. I have heard some dealers will charge upwards of $800 to replace, so avoid if at all possible.
