no power
Hello everybody,
I have an '82 928. Just recently, I lost power on my voltage meter. I have a brand new battery. There is no voltage coming from the alternator. I got a new alternator, installed it, hooked up the 2 battery cables to the alternator, and there was still no power from the alternator. Took it back, got another alternator, they tested it at the shop and it was good. I installed it, hooked up the batter cables to the alternator, and once again, it is dead. There is no power coming from the alternator. Something is killing the alternator. The car starts fine, just running off the battery. Anyone have any suggestions on what the problem could be? Thanks for the help.

RE: no power
How about a possible bad voltage meter on your instrument cluster. Put a voltmeter across your battery terminals + & - while the car is running and see what the voltage is doing. It will move around a bit, but should stay fairly constant in the 13v range.

RE: no power
Thanks for the response. When the car is running, there is power coming from the battery terminals. But there is nothing coming from the alternator. And when I bought a new alternator, it was tested as good at the store, but once I connected it to the batter cables, no voltage was coming from the alternator again. I did this twice, so it is not a bad alternator from the store, it is good when it leaves. Something is shorting out the alternator once I connect it to the battery cables and turn the car on. Any ideas on what could be killing the alternator? Thanks.
