Default stumped on my 83 944

I have a 1983 944 with a 2.5L. non- turbo. When i first start it up it is very sluggish but after it warms up it runs great all except I smell gas. I replaced the O2 sensor since it seemed to run rich but that had little to no effect on the way it runs. The the people that i bought it from broke open the air flow sensor and started adjusting the dial to make up for the problem, but I think they messed up big time. Is there any way thatI can tell how to get it back to factory to the factory setting or doI have to get a new one. And also could the engine temperature sensor or throttle switch have anything to do with the problem.

If your AFM is broke, then it needs to be replaced with a new or rebuilt one for an 83. The only thing they can adjust on it is the CO, and even that adjustment is minor. How did they break it?

Engine temp sensor can cause rough idle, etc when cold, but will get better as the car warms up. TPS can also cause rough running, though that typically will not improve hot or cold.

they popped the cover off of the top and moved the dial inside.
