Just wondering,

I'm thinking of getting a newer 911. Currently have a '99' 996 and I've narrowed my search to the 2002 996 or newer, because I like the headlights better, the 3.6 liter engine, also some creature comforts like a glove box, the onboard computer, and heated seats if I can find one. It’s been great as my first Porsche, but something a little more polished than my basic stripped down version. Is there a significant difference between the 3.4 in my car and the 3.6? Any other details that could help me narrow my search more?

Any insight would be much appreciated as I know several of you own '02's or newer.

I have a 1999 Porsche 911 cab also.

My understanding is the 2002 911 in addition to more Hp changed the valve design. Too be more specfic they added varible valve lift to the already included varible valve timing. This gives the engine more torque at lower RPM's. i have been told it feels like a V8.

FYI, I never liked the 1999 low torque at lift off. I found the clutch hard to work and not stall. If i drove the car for awhile over a few days ( I have 13 vehicles) I would not have a problem but I always knew thecar is weak at a light.

My dealer reprogrammed the alogrithims that Porsche provided to improve the car. The dealer told me there were actually two upgrades for my car. The Porsche dealer did these for free. It made a big difference. Other than that my Porsche has been perfect.

i would humbly suggest you drive the 2005 or newer 997 version of the 911. I think you will find out it is a better car. my feeling before driving one was how can they improve on perfection. They did. I especially liked the 911S

I know what you mean about the clutch being hard to get used to. It took me some time also. I drive the car every day so I've gotten used to it, so smooth operation of it isn't a problem. Wish I could afford a 2005, but the 2002 is within my price range, so that’s why I have narrowed my choices to that one. From what you've told me the 3.6 with the variable valve timing would be more like a V8 which I have somewhat missed since I sold my Vette.Maby this will be just what the doctor ordered, as the Vette never handled like my Porsche does.
