77 911 with 3.2 engine not starting

Hi all, this is my first post im new to the 911 and have upgraded from a 944
I have a 77 911 with a 996 body and a 3.2 engine
When I try to start the car I get the red lights on the dash and when I turn the key to postion I hear a click noise like the solanoid but the engine dosent turn
I tried changing the battery and have the same problem
Any ideas if its the starting motor is it easy to replace?

Thanks

Ken :(

First thing to check Ken in view of the fault description, is that you have good earth between the chassis and the engine. Check the earth strap at both ends and ensure there is no paint or corrosion thats impeding the earth. Reassemble with a bit of grease and star washers to ensure there is a good bite between the strap and the chassis and the engine and the strap.

Cheers bob
I checked the cabling and it seems to be ok everything else in the car works fine lights etc
Might have to arrange to get it sent to doc

Might be worth running a resistance check on the starter motor, or pull it out and make sure it spins up under 12v. Regards Big Bob

If it was a single click, then it's a solenoid problem. Give it a little tap with a hammer, then try it again. If the car starts after that, then the solenoid definately needs to be replaced, and soon.

If it was multiple clicks, then it's a Battery or ground(earth) problem.
