911 Electrical Shut Down
While driving my '87, 911 at 4,000 RPMS for approx'ly 20 minutes, the electrical system shuts down...all dash lights light up,engine stops...leaving the auto in a dangerous position when on the highway. Eventually, I am able to work the car to the shoulder of the road - wait 5 minutes. The car typically restarts and I can drive it (but with fear of the problem reocurring) but at a very low speed. Car has 72,000 miles.
I have recently replaced the DME relay but that does not seem to be the answer. Lastly, I've noticed that when braking hard or in sharp turns, some of the dash lights flicker (not sure if it is related).
Any thoughts on potential problem area. Don't want (and can't afford) to bring to mechanic and start having parts changed out in hopes of finding the cure.
Thanks,
Marty

" Sound like a ground problem?"
Just as likely, almost anywhere downstream of the ignition switch. The switch is probably working 'cause of the warning lights. Warning lights themselves are normal for a stalled engine. Could be power side of ignition or fuel. Could also be trigger side of either. Start by looking for any suspicious wiring. Then get out the wiring cartoons and the voltmeter. Does not sound to me anything like a ground problem, unless one is loose or broken and it's in the direct path between the engine and negative battery terminal. If you want, put an ohmmeter between these 2 points and wiggle ground wires mentioned. An intermittent ground should show up.
