Default is 94 octane better for the car than 91?

I have been using Sunoco 94 octane in my '06 C4S figuring that it's better for the engine and for performance. Is it a waste of $$ and would 91 octane essentially make the same difference? I've heard varying opinions and am now totally confused!

Is it better for the car, probably, but you aren't going to notice any difference in performance without remapping the ECU.
